The Samsung S3500 is a fairly low-level phone. It’s got basic handset features such as a 2 megapixel camera, built-in FM radio, 2.2-inch screen with support for up to 262K colors and microSD card support. It’s already attractive as it is, but Samsung has decided that it would be better if coated with a little bit of “luxury.” Hence, the creation and official announcement of the Samsung GT-S3500, a handset whose difference from the original is mostly that it comes in a stainless steel casing. Its other features are also taken straight from its plasticky predecessor: USB connectivity, Quadband GSM, 35MB of internal memory, and Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo A2DP. No word yet on availability outside of Korea, but it should be sold for about $195 USD.
Music players that can last up to 24 hours on a single charge are so 2005. The trend nowadays points to PMPs that can pump out tunes for more than 50 hours non-stop. This is exactly what Samsung’s new Q2 PMP is all about. Though it may look small, don’t underestimate its lasting power. Besides compatibility with MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, WMV and MPEG-4 media file formats, having an FM radio, built-in microphone and 2.4-inch QVGA display, the Samsung Q2 PMP also boasts having a battery that can run up to 50 hours on a single charge. Samsung hasn’t announced pricing or a local release date yet, but it should be available in the next few weeks.
Despite being outsold by Apple’s iPhone by at least a couple million units, Samsung claims that they now hold 25% of the world’s touchscreen phone market. This is a significantly higher amount than any of its competitors hold, but then again, it has touchscreen phones for all levels in its offerings - from mid to low end phones to their high end smartphones such as the Samsung OmniaHD. Although the above number does merit boasting, I think Samsung would do better to just concentrate on their future offerings and work on delivering their new smartphones (specifically those with the Android OS as well as a few with the Symbian Foundation’s OS) to market so we can see if their millions of touchscreen phones really deserve to be out there.
